Photoshop

A primary key to any successful art project is the final edit. Photoshop has become the image editing tool of choice here at Marvel Arts and is the cornerstone of post production.

In 1993 we began digital image processing with Aldus PhotoStyler, later to become Photoshop. Since then we have kept up with updates to today's current version. With roots in photography, Photoshop was a necessity to lower the cost of image processing. Digital tools also provided more creative options and faster production. The choice seemed obvious. Mastering Photoshop as a whole may be impossible. We are very adept at making the program do what we envision with ease. That's because we use it every day. It is by far the most used program on our systems.

Here you see samples of edits done with real models. We combine a number of elements to arrive at the final product with Photoshop being the final and most critical step.

There are many fine resources available for Photoshop. Books, discussion boards and entire sites devoted to particular aspects. What we offer is how we use it. The presentation is consistent and you can learn from our continuity of vision. Discussions are good for certain purposes but sometimes you may learn also by seeing it done one particular way all the way through to the end. That rather than everyone's version on how it could be done. And trust us, everything can be done a hundred different ways. We'll keep you focused and be encouraging you to develop variants or entirely new ways to produce flexible results.

There are many great add-ons to Photoshop such as filters, brushes and actions to automate your workflow. We use surprisingly few, usually no plug-ins. We'd rather paint the effects. However, we do point out special ones that can save hours for special effects or situations. There's is no one perfect tool or add-on. We'll note the ones that you are likely to get the most use from. Or point out those which produce a highly sought after special effect.

Photoshop doesn't stand alone. By that we mean that simply knowing how to use each tool in the program is not enough. We'll mention the decisions and circumstances of how we use an image. It may help you 'see' how to work with the tool. Knowing a photo is destined for video may require color balance if used in a comp, sizing (depending on formats like HD, DVD) and tonal and light source fine tuning to make it match.

Go the extra distance to make Photoshop work. Create entire designs for web pages and Flash. It's all connected. It's not difficult. It helps to see what others do and read how they do it.

We don't target any particular experience level. Beginners to experts may find our writings informative. We just write what we know.
